Summary

‘Before I had a chance to rebel against the world of my childhood, that world rebelled against me。 In truth, confronting my parents, my social class, its poverty, racism and brutality came second。 From early on I provoked shame and even disgust from my family and others around me。 The only option I had was to get away somehow。 This book is an effort to understand all that。’

Édouard Louis grew up in Hallencourt, a village in northern France where many live below the poverty line。 His bestselling debut novel about life there, The End of Eddy, has sparked debate on social inequality, sexuality and violence。

It is an extraordinary portrait of escaping from an unbearable childhood, inspired by the author’s own。 Written with an openness and compassionate intelligence, ultimately, it asks, how can we create our own freedom?

wow, this was really a much-needed gut punch。

The Knausgaard and Ferrante comparisons are wildly premature (but good marketing)。One of my most common criticisms when I dislike a book comes in the form of an attack on the author - mainly that they've grown up in an elitist bubble, where from the onset of life they were on track for a career in the arts, something that prevents them from experiencing real life (fully aware this is some form of cognitive dissonance to cover my own failings, and on the other side, when I love a book, I am in aw The Knausgaard and Ferrante comparisons are wildly premature (but good marketing)。One of my most common criticisms when I dislike a book comes in the form of an attack on the author - mainly that they've grown up in an elitist bubble, where from the onset of life they were on track for a career in the arts, something that prevents them from experiencing real life (fully aware this is some form of cognitive dissonance to cover my own failings, and on the other side, when I love a book, I am in awe of their elitist upbringing and mode of life – case in point my admiration of Knausgaard, who as a Norwegian won the birth lottery and has had his whole life to think and develop his ideas)。 I’ve been waiting for ‘the great working-class novel’ but the more I think about it, the more paradoxical such a notion appears。Edouard Louis is gay and comes from a working class family, but it’s not only that, it’s not just a blue collar family that eats meat and potatoes, it’s a form of destitute poverty that involves, well it involves exactly what you can already imagine; drinking, misogyny, homophobia, racism, violence。 It’s nothing new or terribly captivating (again, contrast with the elitist world – where ideas are so different and novel)。 It’s reasonable to estimate that in general readers have got it good, and odds are they're not from the working class, and not a part of the milieu Louis has grown up in。 And maybe that’s what I like about reading – I imagine myself as someone with a greater social status; not who I am or where I came from。 And that is exactly where the book turns interesting, Louis battle against himself – partially his social status, but mainly his homosexuality and his painful attempts to be someone else。There was one scene, that was terribly off-putting; if you have read the book YOU KNOW WHICH ONE I’M TALKING ABOUT。 Overall, it is a good book, and I suppose that now since Louis has joined the ranks of the upper echelons of the cultural world, he will have time to develop his ideas, and in several years, once he is in his prime, his status in the literary world, or mine at least, will be elevated。 。。。more

"De mon enfance je n'ai aucun souvenir heureux。" (There is not a single happy memory I have from my childhood。)This is a rough book。 Édouard Louis describes the childhood and early youth as a homosexual boy in rural Northern France (Louis' birthname is Bellegeule), brought up in a poor working class family。 Ideas of manliness and gender are narrow and heavily linked to class behavior。 And Eddy just doesn't fit。 From early childhood on, he behaves different。 And difference is the one thing that i "De mon enfance je n'ai aucun souvenir heureux。" (There is not a single happy memory I have from my childhood。)This is a rough book。 Édouard Louis describes the childhood and early youth as a homosexual boy in rural Northern France (Louis' birthname is Bellegeule), brought up in a poor working class family。 Ideas of manliness and gender are narrow and heavily linked to class behavior。 And Eddy just doesn't fit。 From early childhood on, he behaves different。 And difference is the one thing that is not acceptable in the small village。 From early childhood on, children learn what is acceptable to think, to do and to be。 Especially man seem to be under constant pressure to confirm their manliness, their strength。 The easiest way to do that: degrading others。 Women, minorities - and "less manly" men。 "Les pédés" (comparable to "the fags") are a commonly accepted target。 And Eddy, who's not interested in sports, talks in a higher voice etc。 soon becomes one in the eyes of the others。 Which makes life almost unbearable。While Louis denounces toxic masculinity the restrictiveness and violence of the environment, he sees poverty as the root of it all。 Poverty lowers the self esteem and forces people to seek self assurance in ideas as (gendered) ideas of strength or group coherence by exclusion。 And in a region heavily hit by the de-industrialization poverty is an ubiquitous experience。 Louis' view is a sociological one (the book is dedicated to his academic teacher Didier Éribon) which is reinforced by the structure of the book which is only partly chronological: Most of the chapters are thematic explorations of different ideas, behaviours, groups or institutions that form the experience of the people living there。 Eddy's story stays in the center, but you also learn quite a bit about other people's lifes。 This way of putting things into perspective is a strong point of the book, because it opens spaces for ambiguity。 This is the most overt in the depiction of the father who is often insufferable, especially in his behaviour towards his wife and his children, but is also able to acts of grumpy kindness and even evoked a little pity in me with his back chronically destroyed by factory work。 Even though my personal experiences were very different from what Eddy experiences in the book, some of the feelings I knew: Living in a world that allows only very narrow corridors of behavior which are heavily gendered。 Feeling that this world works against you。 Not knowing that other ways exist and the feeling of being trapped that comes with it。 (view spoiler)[ And the liberation when you finally manage to leave this world。 (hide spoiler)] My younger self back then could not have read this book (for it was published in 2014), but I have a feeling that it would have been a great help。Finally there are some small points I didn't like。 Sometimes the book evokes the same scene a bit too often。 And the end comes very abruptly and leaves most of the change in the future。 I would have liked to get a bit more of a glimpse into that experience, too。 But apart from that, it is an impressive debut and an intensive reading experience that will stay in your head for quite a while。 。。。more

。。。more

Çocukluğun ıssız adasında hapsolup kalan ve git gide silinen Eddy’nin hikayesini anlatan bu nefis kitap, yazarın önceki kitabında olduğu gibi otobiyografik anlarla örülü。 Yetişkinliğin huzurlu ikliminden hayattaki ilk yıllarının vahşetine bakan Edouard Louis yeryüzünde nefes alıp vermeye çalışan hemen her queer erkek çocuğun yaşadığı sancıları bir kez daha hatırlatıyor。 Son derece dolu ve hüzünlü bir okuma deneyimiydi。

This was an hard book to put down, the way Edouard Louis writes his characters and story is just hard to let go of。 It's tragic and I furiating, the misstreatment Eddy faces for simply being femenine and gay。 It's so well told and somewhat gritty and the time and I'm very courious how the next book by Edouard Louis is going to be。 This was an hard book to put down, the way Edouard Louis writes his characters and story is just hard to let go of。 It's tragic and I furiating, the misstreatment Eddy faces for simply being femenine and gay。 It's so well told and somewhat gritty and the time and I'm very courious how the next book by Edouard Louis is going to be。 。。。more

A novel driven by a stream-of-consciousness narrative style in which the titular character recalls growing up gay in the 1990s in a rural French village。I am not usually a fan of writing like this and whilst it was not easy to settle into, it was worth the effort。 The first act sees Eddy whimsically explore his family and his village, slowly building up his context so that when the second act comes, you really know him well。 The second act was more engaging, focusing more on Eddy himself, though A novel driven by a stream-of-consciousness narrative style in which the titular character recalls growing up gay in the 1990s in a rural French village。I am not usually a fan of writing like this and whilst it was not easy to settle into, it was worth the effort。 The first act sees Eddy whimsically explore his family and his village, slowly building up his context so that when the second act comes, you really know him well。 The second act was more engaging, focusing more on Eddy himself, though it would not carry the emotive gravitas without the earlier part。Louis writes on themes of gender, class, sexuality and shame in a way which made me look at these topics and their complex intersectionality in an entirely new way。 For example, by some perspectives being of a higher social class can be synonymous with a loss of masculinity and a disregard of the archaic gender-conforming roles for men and women。 In this way, this novel exposes society's complex views on sexuality and suggests that negative attitudes are far more than "just" homophobia。 。。。more

A powerful story - and as such, hard to take in at times。 It's a story I've never heard before, and one that needs to be told and read。 The more we know about the challenges others go through, the more empathetic we can all be。 It's hard to imagine what someone from a radically different background might have gone through - but after this book, so well told - there's no longer the need to imagine。 A powerful story - and as such, hard to take in at times。 It's a story I've never heard before, and one that needs to be told and read。 The more we know about the challenges others go through, the more empathetic we can all be。 It's hard to imagine what someone from a radically different background might have gone through - but after this book, so well told - there's no longer the need to imagine。 。。。more
